Kibi or Kyebi is a town in southeastern Ghana on the eastern slopes of the Atewa Range, and is the capital of the East Akim Municipal District.[1] It lies at an altitude of 318 m, and has a population of about 23,000. It is served at a short distance by a station on the Ghanaian Railway network.
Kibi has a school for the deaf, founded in 1975, which by 2008 had 213 students.[2] Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, born in Kibi without a tibia in his right leg, became famous when he became the subject of a documentary film Emmanuel's Gift narrated by Oprah Winfrey.[3]
Tarkwaian rocks, a major source of gold, have been found near Kibi.[4] Several mining companies including Paramount Mining Corporation have been exploring their potential.[5] In 2004 RUSAL, a major Russian Aluminium applied to the Minerals Commission and the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Industry Committee for permission to explore the bauxite deposits near Kibi.[6] Kibi is the traditional capital of the Akyem Abuakwa State in Ghana.( also known as Okyeman)The Ofori Panin paramount stool which is the traditional seat of the Okyenhene is located here.
